Mobilgard™ 312 doubles oil drain interval from 500 to 1,000 service hours

Situation

The PT Bangka Jaya Line wantted to extend the oil drain interval (ODI) of their cargo ships while maintaining their high engine operation standards. As part of our Mobil Oil Drain Optimization (ODO) program, ExxonMobil Marine Limited investigated the maintenance schedule of the KM Sentosa 18 general cargo vessels, powered by a Daihatsu 6DKM-26L main engine using low sulphur fuel. The engine had an ODI of 500 hours at that time. 

Recommendation 

ExxonMobil Marine Limited, in collaboration with local distributor PT Supra Indolub Prakasa (SIP), recommended  PT Bangka Jaya Line to switch to Mobilgard™ 312. 

The lubricant, part of Mobilgard™12 series, was specifically developed for use in trunk piston engines operating on low sulphur distillate fuels in marine and industrial applications.

While strictly following our Mobil ODO program’s scientific approach, we performed service fills with Mobilgard™ 312 on KM Sentosa 18 and monitored the in-service lubricant condition. 

Impact

Our findings revealed Mobilgard™ 312 delivered overall better operating efficiency. This included better BN reserve to protect against corrosion, soot control and high degradation resistance, resulting in less engine down time. 

PT Bangka Jaya Line extended their ODI by up to 1,000 hours—ultimately increasing vessel sailing time and reducing their environmental impact and total cost of ownership.
